Woocommerce HTTP500 error when updating Paypal Express plugin?

If like me, your Woocommerce WordPress ecommerce store went down after a plugin update – fret no more!  I panicked and fired off an e-mail to my host Guru Cloud.  They replied in a matter of minutes with a line from the error log identifying plugin woocommerce-gateway-paypal-express-checkout as the offender.  Great service Guru – fast support is always greatly appreciated!

Funny thing is, this is an official Woocommerce Paypal plugin – do they not test these before publishing??

How do I fix the Woocommerce HTTP500 update error?

I used cpanel filemanager to rename the folder to woocommerce-gateway-paypal-express-checkout-old and the site was back up.  I did not hang about for an update as a lot of my payments are made via Paypal.  I switched to Paypal for Woocommerce by AngellEye.  Installed and working in 2 minutes.

I have a couple of WooCommerce stores so I did the same thing and all was well again – a far cry from my Magento days where I would be in tears by now trying to get this fixed.
